Natural Healing Project

We understand that nothing can take away the pain of your loss, but we hope that our new Natural Healing Project will offer some comfort and support

A small number of accredited therapists including acupuncturists, Reiki practitioners, and reflexologists have helped us to create this new Project. Taking a holistic approach to loss and grief, and offering an alternative to those affected or those waiting on a counselling service. Practitioners will also be encouraged to attend a training / awareness days provided or facilitated by our charity, to give them an insight as to what difficulties parents may face following the loss of their child and how therapy may help.

The three main reasons why it is important:

  1. Families can wait months to access counselling services
  2. Healing can occur through other means, as not all families are ready / comfortable to speak to a counsellor
  3. Parents, especially mother’s, can experience negative thoughts about their bodies, holistic therapies can help to ease that

Alternative therapies can be helpful for:
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Difficult memories
  • Conceiving after loss
  • Health issues related to stress
  • Unreleased grief

Therapies Available through the Project

Reiki  At a time of  grieving Reiki and Spiritual Healing can be of great benefit to the bereaved. As the Universal Life Force Energies heal the whole mind, body, emotions and spirit, the energies will go along way towards giving the individual inner peace and the ability to move forward in their lives. Reiki and Spiritual Healing can only have a positive effect at a very negative time in our lives.

Reflexology Clinical Reflexology is a non-invasive, holistic therapy that works alongside conventional medical care, helping to rebalance your body to achieve healing and wellbeing in a relaxing, rejuvenating and therapeutic way. Releasing tension often brought on by stressful situations (bereavement) , restoring energy levels, and improving sleep, helping you to feel emotionally and physically stronger.

Aromatherapy Body/Indian Head Back and Shoulder massages and Massage therapy is an integral form of treatment that can have a deep effect on the mind, body and emotions. Massage therapy supports the healthy digestive system, stimulates the lymphatic system and aids in improving circulation. Massage therapy can be of great benefit to grief therapy.  By increasing the flow of circulation, massage flushes away hormones related to stress and increases the flow of endorphins which are natural mood elevators.

Grieving and mourning is a natural part of life, which is linked to variety of physical and emotional states.  Grieving allows the body to express the pain and bereavement from the loss of a loved one or major life changes that trigger the feelings of grief.  Grieving aids in cleansing the acidic toxins that build up in the muscles.  Thus the benefits of massage can be extremely beneficial. The use of Aromatherapy Essential Oils in conjunction with massage can help to reduce the state of stress, while calming the mind and spirit.

Acupuncture Acupuncture is an ancient system of healing developed thousands of years ago, in China. Although it originated in China, it has been used widely throughout many Asian countries. The aim of Acupuncture is to restore the Qi (pronounced Chee) which is the Universal Life Energy that circulates throughout the body via the painless application of fine needles in certain pressure points across the body. Qi is made up of Ying and Yang and although opposite, these forces are complimentary and need to balance to keep a clear and healthy flow of energy through the body. If the Qi becomes blocked, it can result in physical and emotional ill health. An imbalance in the body can result from emotional responses such as anger, fear, and grief. To restore the balance of the Qi, the acupuncturist will stimulate the acupuncture points that are specific to you to counteract the imbalance.

Emotional Freedom Technique Work related stress, depression, relationship problems and anxieties all affect our mental and physical health. These negative emotions block the flow of energy through the body and have a detrimental effect on our health and well-being. E.F.T is a powerful new method based on the discovery that emotional trauma contributes greatly to disease. Scientific studies have shown that E.F.T can rapidly reduce the emotional impact of memories and incidents that trigger emotional distress. When the distress is reduced, or removed, the body can often rebalance itself and the healing process is accelerated. E.F.T is a gentle tapping technique (using the fingertips). Certain Meridian points on the face and body are gently tapped on with the fingertips and are combined with verbalizing the identified problem followed by a general affirmation phrase.

Matrix Reimprinting using E.F.T Helps you quickly release your emotional issues and helps you gain control over your life. It gives you massive insights into what’s been holding you back, and helps you to get resolution on your blocks and move forward. And what if you could learn a way to rewrite your memories? Can you imagine how free you would feel if you could finally let go and move on.

How to Apply and FAQ’s** The Project is not ready to accept referrals yet. We will update once funding and plans are finalised

How do I apply for this service?

Referrals for this service can be made only via your bereavement midwife, support group, GP or Health Visitor.  We’re sorry, but we are unable to accept self referrals at this time. They will complete a form with you that will then be passed onto us.

How do I choose a therapy / therapist?

We can help you to choose a therapy / therapist by providing a simple information pack, and contact information for the therapists / practitioners so you can ask any questions you need to. But ultimately, the choice will be yours. Everybody has different needs and will feel more comfortable with different things / people. Have a good look through the treatments and  therapists to see what / who appeals to you the most.

Does the therapist report back to the charity / my referrer?

Absolutely not, other than possibly a very simple “have you been helped?” type form at the very end. Once you have chosen a therapist, all discussion, treatment, appointment making and any contract made is entirely confidential between you and them. We simply pay the bill!

How many sessions can you fund?

That depends on the therapy that you choose. Each of the therapists who are part of the Project have offered a separate rate for their treatments for our referrals; however we of course must set a limit to ensure we can help as many families as possible. We can currently fund up to 8 treatments per family. This for example will cover the recommended number of sessions for one person to receive a full course of acupuncture, or a number of relaxation sessions for a couple who would like to try reiki. You will be issued with vouchers from the Charity so you and your therapist can keep track of your available treatments.

What expectations should I have of receiving an alternative therapy?

That’s a difficult one to answer and depends on lots of factors. It is certainly a question you need to discuss with your therapist during your first meeting. The hard truth is that nothing can ever take the pain of losing a child away, but it may be that an alternative therapy can help with managing those difficult feelings that follow. It’s important to understand that any therapy could open up a whole range of feelings and emotions that you may have previously hidden away, so it could be that you end up actually feeling worse to start with while you work through those feelings before later on feeling the benefits.

It may be that as well as offering treatment, a therapist offers advice about your wellbeing that only you can then control. As a general example, if you are receiving acupuncture for anxiety, but during your assessment you say that you drink gallons of coffee each day, it is likely that you would be advised to cut back on caffeine. If you then continue to drink gallons of coffee each day, it would be difficult for acupuncture to have an effect with regards to anxiety, so the full benefits of any treatment may sometimes depend on the things you do as well as the actual treatment itself.

Where has the funding for this service come from?

We are a small charity and rely on donations from supporters and fundraisers.  Once we have some feedback and evidence that families have benefited from the therapies, we will be applying for funding to enable us to continue providing this service.
